Smart Home, Streaming, Gaming and other “Headless” Wireless Devices

Wireless Devices that cannot use 802.1X

The eduroam wireless network at TCNJ utilizes the IEEE 802.1X standard for authentication. This provides ease of use and security for TCNJ community members as well as other visiting eduroam-affiliated guests.

Unfortunately, there are many types of wireless devices that are not advanced enough to support 802.1X. Examples include:

  • gaming consoles (PS/Xbox/Nintendo)
  • portable gaming devices (PSP/PS Vita/DS/3DS)
  • smart TVs, BluRay players, Roku, Chromecast, AppleTV and Amazon Firestick
  • Amazon Echo and Google Home devices

TCNJ has established a method for using these types of devices on the college wireless system. The device will be registered using a web portal and then connected to the Welcome-to-TCNJ wireless network. Instructions for registration are provided below.

Registered devices will be permitted on the network for a limited duration, based on type of user. The number of allowed device registrations is limited, again based on type of user. Following registration, devices will need to be configured to connect to the Welcome-to-TCNJ network. Once the device registration expires, it will need to be registered again.

Durations and limits for devices:

  • Students – 180 calendar days (up to 8 devices)
  • Faculty and Staff – 365 calendar days (number of devices not limited)
  • Guests (including eduroam guests) – 24 hours (up to 8 devices)

Unlike devices connected to eduroam, devices connected to Welcome-to-TCNJ will only work on the TCNJ campus.

To register your device:

  1. Navigate to https://aruba-clearpass.tcnj.edu/guest/ from a web browser.
  2. Enter your username, which should be your email address. Be sure to include the portion after starting with the “@”.
  3. Enter your password.
    1. Follow the on-screen instructions to create/register the device.
    2. Assign it a name that is meaningful to you.
    3. Make sure to use the wireless MAC address for the device.
    4. Check the box for “AirGroup” if it is the type of device you will be streaming content to directly from another device, e.g. Chromecast, AppleTV.
    5. If enabling AirGroup, choose “Personal” to keep the device private. Choose “Shared” to allow another user to stream content to the device as well.
If “Shared” is chosen, be sure to enter at least one username otherwise the device will be accessible by anyone on the campus wireless.
    6. Click on the “Create Device” button.
  4. Now that your device is registered, configure it to connect to the SSID
    Welcome-to-TCNJ.

To view or manage your device(s):

    1. Navigate to https://aruba-clearpass.tcnj.edu/guest/ from a web browser.
    2. Enter your login credentials as above.
    3. Choose the “Manage Devices” option on the left-side menu.
    4. Click on a device to manage.
      1. The Remove option allows you to delete the device.
      2. The Edit option allows you to change settings for the device.
      3. The last IP address assigned to the device will be shown.
      4. When finished, click on the “Update Device” button.

Devices that are capable of using 802.1X, such as laptops, smart phones, and tablets, should NOT be registered on this system. There is no security on the Welcome-to-TCNJ wireless network. Additionally, Welcome-to-TCNJ requires periodic re-registration of devices and limits the number of permitted registrations per user. In contrast, eduroam provides 802.1X-capable devices both security and enhanced mobility. If unauthorized devices are discovered on Welcome-to-TCNJ, they may be removed by TCNJ/IT.
