eduroam CAT tool

Configuring your device on eduroam using the CAT tool

In order to use your device on the eduroam network for the first time (or following a complete update/reset) you will need to configure your device for eduroam on the TCNJ campus. This procedure will ensure the smoothest and most secure configuration experience, and it is highly recommended you do this before travel to another participating eduroam institution.

There are two paths to connect your device to the eduroam network, depending on whether it has cellular data (e.g. smart phone) or not (e.g. laptop).

To configure your smart phone or other cellular-connected device instead of connecting to a wireless network:

Apple iOS

  1. Use Safari to navigate to https://cat.eduroam.org/. (Other browsers may not function correctly.)
    1. You may also scan the QR code on the right.
  2. Click on the large button that reads “Click here to download your eduroam installer”
  3. A pop-up will appear that lists the locations, sorted by location, where the eduroam CAT tool is used.
  4. Choose “The College of New Jersey (TCNJ)“. If TCNJ does not appear, you may search for it by name in the bar below the list.
    1. You must choose TCNJ or the process will fail.
  5. The next page should display a download button that is for the device you are using.
    1. If the wrong installer package was automatically chosen, you may click on the “Choose another installer to download” link to find the correct one.
  6. Click on the download link and allow your device to download the installer/profile.
    1. On some versions of iOS, the process to install the eduroam profile may automatically begin after the download completes.
    2. On other versions of iOS, you must navigate to the Settings App -> General -> Profile.
      1. Select the eduroam profile and click “Install” at the top right corner. You may have to enter your phone’s security PIN.
  7. Follow the prompts to enter your TCNJ email address and password.
    1. Remember to enter your full email address, not just your username.
  8. You should now be connected to eduroam.

Android

  1. Download the “eduroam CAT” app from the Google Play store.
    1. You may use the QR code on the right.
    2. The developer is GÉANT Association.
  2. Open the app. It will request permission to access the device location. If you allow this request, the app may automatically find the TCNJ configuration.
    1. If TCNJ does not appear, turn on the “Manual Search” switch at the bottom of the screen. Enter “tcnj” in the search bar.
  3. Choose the “The College of New Jersey (TCNJ)” configuration.
    1. The app will request permission to access files. Allow this request or the procedure will fail.
  4. Click on the “Install” button on the next screen which reads “Configuration File Summary” at the top.
  5. On the next page, enter your TCNJ email address and password and click the “Install” button.
    1. The page should then display some status information including “Profile Installed”.
  6.  The device will then connect to eduroam which you may confirm via the settings menu or status indicator at the top of the screen.

To configure your non-cellular device (e.g. laptops, Windows, MacOS):

  1. Open the device network preferences.
  2. Select the Welcome-to-TCNJ wireless network.
  3. Open your native system web browser.
    1. On many mobile devices, a functionally limited browser, called a captive network assistant (CNA), will automatically pop up. Most CNA are not compatible with the onboarding process.
  4. The “Welcome to TCNJ” captive portal web page should be displayed.
    1. If it does not, try to navigate to a webpage such as tcnj.edu until the captive portal page is displayed.
  5. Choose the link under “TCNJ Students and Employees”.
  6. Click on the large button that reads “Click here to download your eduroam installer”
  7. A pop-up will appear that lists the locations, sorted by location, where the eduroam CAT tool is used.
  8. Choose “The College of New Jersey (TCNJ)“. If TCNJ does not appear, you may search for it by name in the bar below the list.
    1. You must choose TCNJ or the process will fail.
  9. The next page should display a download button that is for the device you are using.
    1. If the wrong installer package was automatically chosen, you may click on the “Choose another installer to download” link to find the correct one.
  10. Click on the download link and allow your device to download and run the installer/profile.
  11. Follow the prompts to enter your TCNJ email address and password.
    1. Remember to enter your full email address, not just your username.
  12. You should now be connected to eduroam.
    1. Some devices may require that you connect to eduroam manually.
  13. “Forget” the Welcome-to-TCNJ network.

Pay attention to the username and password it is asking for. On the eduroam wifi network your login is your username plus “@tcnj.edu”, like your email address.

This is how eduroam determines a user’s home institution. While you will need to provide your TCNJ username and password during the configuration, the wizard may also ask you for your local (computer-only) username and password so that the wizard can make changes to your device such as installing a security certificate or updating your network preferences.

If you have trouble with the configuration wizard, try running it again. There is no harm in running it multiple times. In fact, if you have wireless configuration problems in the future, the first thing you should do is re-run the wizard.

Known Issues

  • If you accidentally created an account on the guest wireless network, you will not be presented with the initial Students/Employees vs Guest “choice page” again for 24 hours. If you wish to OnBoard to eduroam during that time, follow the instructions above. If using a non-cellular device, visit https://aruba-clearpass.tcnj.edu/guest/welcome.php to go directly to the “choice page”. Choose the link under “TCNJ Students and Employees” and proceed through the OnBoarding process as usual.
  • Apple devices may need to “forget” the Welcome-to-TCNJ network so that the device does not connect to that network automatically in the future.
  • Some versions of the Apple Captive Network Assistant (CNA) are not compatible with the OnBoarding procedure. Specifically, iOS and MacOS devices have some additional instructions to OnBoard to eduroam.
    • MacOS – When the CNA pops up, the user must choose “Cancel” at the bottom right corner of the screen. Afterwards, open Safari and follow the OnBoarding instructions above on this page.
    • iOS – If using the Welcome-to-TCNJ network to onboard, the user must choose “Cancel” at the top right of the screen, when the CNA pops up, and then choose “Use Without Internet”. Afterwards, open Safari and follow the instructions above.
  • The system time on the device being OnBoarded MUST be correct, otherwise the installer may fail.
    • In Windows 10, this may mean that all date/time options must be set to “automatic”.
